Sew & Save Kuching South: Learning Through Upcycling

On 26 September, 3 October and 10 October 2025, PSJKM collaborated with Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan (MBKS). Across three sessions, Sew & Save Kuching South brought practical sustainability learning to the local community.

The programme involved 90 participants from the MBKS community. Moreover, participants explored practical ways to reuse everyday materials that often become household waste.

The programme featured a mini exhibition and hands-on sewing workshops. Participants learned how to transform plastic bags, old T-shirts and used jeans into useful products.

Therefore, the programme connected sustainability awareness with practical creative skills. It also encouraged participants to rethink how they use, reuse and manage everyday materials.

PSJKM sincerely thanks Datuk Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South, for supporting this community initiative.

Turning Everyday Waste Into Useful Products

The Sew & Save Kuching South programme featured several practical upcycling activities. Participants first explored how plastic waste could become useful key pouches.

Next, they learned how to transform old T-shirts into practical floor mats. Meanwhile, participants also explored how used jeans could become tote bags.

These activities demonstrated that discarded materials can still hold practical value. Furthermore, participants could directly experience how creative skills can extend the useful life of unwanted materials.

The workshops therefore made sustainability more approachable. Instead of discussing waste management only in theory, participants could learn through direct making and experimentation.

Connecting Upcycling With the SDGs

The programme also raised awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through hands-on activities, participants explored how everyday choices can support more responsible consumption.

For instance, reusing old clothing can reduce unnecessary textile waste. Similarly, repurposing plastic bags can encourage communities to consider alternative uses for existing materials.

Therefore, Sew & Save Kuching South connected environmental awareness with practical action. Participants could learn new skills while understanding how reuse can contribute to more sustainable communities.

Empowering the Kuching South Community

The collaboration with MBKS also highlights the value of local partnerships. Through community-based programmes, sustainability knowledge can reach people directly within their communities.

PSJKM appreciates the support of Datuk Wee Hong Seng and Encik Jaris Ting from the Recycling Unit. Their support helped create opportunities for the MBKS community to explore practical upcycling skills.

Furthermore, partnerships like this can help strengthen local sustainability efforts across Sarawak. PSJKM welcomes more local organisations that want to develop similar community initiatives.
