Exploring Operational Sustainability Solutions with DSV Penang
In August 2026, PSJKM and DSV explored operational sustainability solutions through an employee-led session in Penang. Moreover, the session focused on how operational materials reaching the end of their original purpose could support new applications.
The session continued the sustainability journey between DSV and PSJKM. Previously, both organisations explored how discarded materials could become useful products. However, this time, the focus moved closer to DSV’s daily operations.
Bringing Employees Into the Process
Rather than developing solutions from the outside, DSV invited employees to share their operational experience. Therefore, 10 DSV Penang employees from different departments joined the session.
These employees understand their daily processes and material needs. As a result, they could identify practical opportunities that might otherwise remain unnoticed.
The team explored several questions during the discussion. What materials do we use? What eventually becomes waste? What do we need? How could we use materials differently?
Together, the employees generated more than 20 ideas. These ideas then became the starting point for further exploration with PSJKM.
From Operational Waste to Functional Possibilities
Following the session, PSJKM assessed selected recovered materials from DSV operations. Meanwhile, the team explored how these materials could support operational sustainability solutions.
The concepts included reusable pallet wraps, pallet dividers and washable shoe covers. In addition, the team explored pallet corner protectors, table covers and reusable cartons.
Furthermore, PSJKM developed several prototypes using recovered sling wrap and plastic straps. These included lunch box bags, card holders, files, tote bags, paper trays and hand pouches.
The prototypes do not represent confirmed operational products yet. Instead, they demonstrate what could become possible through continued testing, refinement and collaboration.
Creating Value Beyond Materials
However, the project looks beyond waste reduction alone. PSJKM also connects the development process with local sewing communities and their skills.
Previously, the DSV × PSJKM upcycling initiative transformed more than 800 kg of textile waste into over 1,400 handcrafted products. Furthermore, the initiative generated nearly RM40,000 in income opportunities for local artisans and sewing communities.
Therefore, future operational sustainability solutions could potentially create value across several areas. These include material recovery, operational needs and community income opportunities.
Building Sustainability From Real Operations
Most importantly, the session placed operational employees at the centre of the conversation. Instead of asking people to simply adopt a sustainability programme, DSV created space for employees to shape potential solutions.
Meanwhile, PSJKM contributed its experience in upcycling, sewing, design and prototyping. Together, both sides can explore solutions that connect real materials, real operational needs and real people.
The journey therefore continues from waste recovery towards operational sustainability solutions that could potentially support everyday logistics activities.
What Could Come Next?
Ultimately, the DSV Penang session opened another chapter in the DSV × PSJKM sustainability journey. Moreover, it showed how employee ideas can help turn operational challenges into opportunities for innovation.
Through continued collaboration, PSJKM and DSV will continue exploring what recovered materials could become. Most importantly, the goal remains to create useful possibilities while connecting environmental action with people and community.
