From Corporate Change to ESG Impact Begins with a Different Question
Corporate change often creates unexpected challenges. Mergers, acquisitions, and rebranding frequently leave behind assets that organisations can no longer use. However, From Corporate Change to ESG Impact demonstrates that these moments can also create meaningful opportunities.
Following DSV’s acquisition of DB Schenker in Malaysia, many uniforms no longer reflected the company’s new identity. Initially, DSV approached PSJKM to discuss a large quantity of unused uniform fabric. Instead of simply collecting the materials, PSJKM proposed a different suggestion.
How could these retired uniforms create lasting ESG impact instead of becoming waste?
Creating Value Beyond Upcycling
Rather than focusing only on textile diversion, DSV decided to involve people throughout the journey. First, selected employees joined a practical sewing session to understand the basics of upcycling. Afterwards, they worked alongside PSJKM artisans to develop product ideas using the retired uniforms.
Together, they explored different materials, selected suitable colours, and refined several prototypes before choosing two final products. The partner collection reflected DSV’s blue and white corporate identity. Meanwhile, the employee collection incorporated additional surplus fabrics, representing both the company’s past and its future.
Consequently, every product carried a meaningful story of transformation.
From Corporate Change to ESG Impact Through Collaboration
The workshops marked only the beginning. Afterwards, more than 40 PSJKM artisans continued producing the collection using the remaining retired uniforms.
Within two months, the project transformed over 800 kilograms of textile waste into more than 1,400 handcrafted products. Furthermore, the initiative generated nearly RM40,000 in income opportunities for local artisans and sewing communities. Based on conservative estimates, diverting 500 kilograms of textile waste may also avoid approximately 7.5 tonnes of CO₂e emissions.
Moreover, DSV demonstrated responsible governance by engaging management, employees, and community artisans in one transparent initiative. As a result, the project aligned business decisions with measurable environmental, social, and governance outcomes.
A New Chapter for Sustainable Corporate Leadership
From Corporate Change to ESG Impact shows that sustainability begins with better decisions rather than bigger budgets. Instead of viewing retired uniforms as a disposal challenge, DSV transformed them into meaningful corporate gifts, employee engagement opportunities, and community income.
The initiative also contributed towards SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
