Upcycle T-Shirt to Tote Bag with Simple Cutting and Tying
Can an old T-shirt become a stylish tote bag? During our June Upcycle T-Shirt to Tote Bag workshop, participants discovered that it certainly can.
PSJKM proudly collaborated with Taman Tugu Malaysia, UNIQLO Malaysia, and Epal Sewing Centre to host another inspiring Eco Workshop. This time, everyone learned how to upcycle a T-shirt to a tote bag without using a sewing machine. Instead, participants only needed a pair of scissors, an unwanted T-shirt, and a little creativity.
As a result, beginners, children, and adults completed their own reusable tote bags within a short session. More importantly, everyone experienced how simple sustainable actions can create lasting environmental impact.
No Sewing Skills? No Problem!
Unlike traditional sewing workshops, this activity required no sewing experience.
Firstly, participants folded their T-shirts before cutting away the sleeves and collar. Next, they cut the bottom into strips before tying each strip together. Consequently, the T-shirt transformed into a durable tote bag within minutes.
Because the process was so simple, everyone could participate confidently. Therefore, the workshop welcomed complete beginners, families, and even young children.
Moreover, many participants expressed surprise that they could create something so practical without touching a sewing machine.
Families Created Memories Together
One of the most heartwarming moments came from seeing families join the workshop together.
Parents worked alongside their children, while friends exchanged creative ideas throughout the activity. Meanwhile, laughter filled the room as everyone compared their finished tote bags.
Interestingly, several participants even brought their own favourite T-shirts from home. Instead of throwing them away, they transformed sentimental clothing into useful everyday bags.
As a result, every tote bag reflected its owner’s personality and creativity.
Every Tote Bag Became One of a Kind
Although everyone followed the same instructions, no two bags looked alike.
Some participants experimented with different fringe lengths. Others created unique handle shapes or decorative cuts. Furthermore, several participants discussed adding embroidery and fabric decorations after returning home.
Therefore, the workshop encouraged creativity instead of perfection.
Rather than producing identical products, participants proudly carried home bags that told their own stories.
