Through our Agricultural Sustainability collaboration with BERNAS, PSJKM explores new possibilities from the rice industry. Together, we look beyond conventional waste management and explore how materials can create new value. Moreover, this collaboration connects agricultural sustainability with circularity, craftsmanship and community empowerment.
From Rice Bags to Everyday Products
First, PSJKM explores the potential of used jute rice bags and plastic bags from BERNAS. Instead of treating these materials as waste, our community sewists transform them into useful products. For example, they can create handbags, pouches and trays from these materials.
Furthermore, every product carries a story of material recovery and skilled craftsmanship. At the same time, the process creates opportunities for community sewists to apply their skills. Therefore, Agricultural Sustainability can create both environmental and social value.
Giving Paddy By-Products a New Purpose
Meanwhile, the collaboration also explores agricultural by-products from the paddy production process. PSJKM researches the potential of paddy straw and rice husk through our natural dye development work.
Consequently, these materials can contribute to natural colours for products such as shawls and shirts. Instead of viewing agricultural by-products only as waste, we can explore their potential as creative resources.
Moreover, this approach allows us to connect agriculture with sustainable design and traditional craftsmanship. Thus, Agricultural Sustainability can extend beyond farming and food production.
