Upcycling Workshop Malaysia Inspires Future Changemakers
The first Upcycling Workshop Malaysia under the ReMadeSia initiative officially began at Sunway College on 7 July 2026. PSJKM partnered with MyUmbrella and AIESEC Sunway to introduce students to circular economy practices through a fun, hands-on experience. Moreover, participants discovered how discarded umbrellas could become practical tote bags without using a sewing machine. The workshop encouraged creativity while proving that sustainable solutions can remain simple, engaging, and accessible for everyone.
Learning Sustainability Through Creativity
The ReMadeSia team designed this workshop for beginners with no sewing experience. Therefore, participants only needed cutting, tying, and simple weaving techniques to complete their bags. Before the event, the PSJKM research and development team improved the original design to create a fully no-sew version. As a result, everyone could confidently complete the project while enjoying the creative process. Furthermore, participants explored different ways to personalise their finished bags, making every creation unique.
A Partnership That Creates Greater Impact
This Upcycling Workshop Malaysia reflected more than a crafting session. Instead, it demonstrated how meaningful partnerships can create lasting environmental and social impact. MyUmbrella supplied discarded umbrella materials, while PSJKM transformed them into learning opportunities through ReMadeSia. Meanwhile, AIESEC Sunway connected passionate university students with a practical sustainability experience. Together, the collaboration encouraged young people to rethink waste and recognise the value hidden inside everyday materials.
Building the Future of ReMadeSia
The Sunway programme marked the first community activation for ReMadeSia after its successful public launch at Malaysia Gifts Fair 2026. Throughout the workshop, students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and curiosity. Consequently, the event strengthened ReMadeSia’s vision of connecting businesses, communities, and educational institutions through circular economy initiatives. Upcycling Workshop Malaysia now represents the beginning of a larger movement that will introduce more creative sustainability programmes across the country.
