Dormez Upcycles Waste into Nasi Lemak Pouch for CNY
Recently, Dormez partnered with PSJKM to create a meaningful upcycling initiative. Therefore, the project produced the Dormez Upcycles Waste into Nasi Lemak Pouch gift for Chinese New Year. Instead of discarding waste, Dormez reused manufacturing materials creatively. Consequently, the initiative reduced textile waste while supporting local craftsmanship. Meanwhile, PSJKM artisans transformed these materials into reusable pouches with care. As a result, the collaboration showed how industry and community can build sustainable solutions together.
Giving Textile Waste a Second Life
First, Dormez collected fabric offcuts from pillowcase production. Additionally, the company reused plastic sheets that wrapped fabrics during shipment. Instead of disposing these materials, the team redirected them into a creative upcycling project. Consequently, the materials became useful resources rather than waste. Moreover, this effort supports responsible production practices and sustainability awareness. Therefore, the Dormez Upcycles Waste into Nasi Lemak Pouch initiative highlights how companies can rethink manufacturing waste.
Inspired by the Malaysian Nasi Lemak Packet
Next, PSJKM designed the pouch based on the iconic nasi lemak packet. Traditionally, vendors wrap nasi lemak using paper folded into a triangular shape. Therefore, the team adapted this familiar design into a reusable pouch. As a result, the pouch reflects Malaysian culture and everyday resourcefulness. Furthermore, users can store snacks, small items, or travel accessories inside the pouch. Consequently, the Dormez Upcycles Waste into Nasi Lemak Pouch product blends cultural identity with sustainability.
Community Craftsmanship in Action
Meanwhile, PSJKM artisans produced each pouch using recovered materials. Because every fabric offcut differs slightly, each pouch carries unique characteristics. Therefore, artisans adapt their sewing skills to work with every material piece. As a result, the project supports meaningful livelihood opportunities within the sewing community. Additionally, the initiative contributes to SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production.
Sustainable Gifts with Purpose
Finally, Dormez distributed the pouches as Chinese New Year corporate gifts. Consequently, the Dormez Upcycles Waste into Nasi Lemak Pouch initiative demonstrates how businesses can create sustainable festive gifts. Moreover, organizations can explore corporate gift collaborations here:
