Discovering Taman Negara and Its Living Heritage
The ancient rainforest of Taman Negara holds immense natural and cultural value. It spans three states – Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu – and covers about 4,343 sq km. It is estimated to be over 130 million years old, making it one of the world’s oldest tropical rainforest ecosystems.
The park supports rich biodiversity and also houses indigenous communities whose lives are intertwined with the forest’s resources. Yet many of these communities remain under-represented in tourism and commercial benefit streams.
PSJKM’s Visit: Engaging with Three Indigenous Villages
Recently, our team from Persatuan Seni Jahitan Kreatif Malaysia (PSJKM), led by Chairman Dato Fully Chye, visited three indigenous villages within Taman Negara: Kampung Aul, Kampung Dedari, and Kampung Cangkung.
We interviewed over 15 villagers across the three settlements, including the village chiefs, to understand their current situation and aspiration for empowerment. Through this dialogue, we discovered strong interest in joining PSJKM’s future programme to deepen their culture and craft skills.
Turning Nature’s Resources into Sustainable Livelihoods
During the visits, villagers expressed desire to convert local raw materials into commercial-ready items for eco-tourists. They pointed to rattan, wild fibre, leaves and natural dyes found near their homes. We discussed how PSJKM could support them through training in eco-printing, natural dye methods and craft finishing. This initiative aims to enable the communities to participate in tourism value-chains and sustainable fashion.
Why the Time is Right for Action
While Taman Negara draws visitors for trekking, canopy walks and nature tours, indigenous communities often remain peripheral to the benefits. For example, the park is widely recognised as one of the oldest rainforest systems, yet many traditional craft opportunities remain untapped. By partnering with PSJKM, these communities can begin to share in the forest economy while preserving their heritage.
