Introducing Sustainability at Schools

On 30 April 2025, PSJKM proudly conducted our first sustainability at school program at SJKC Kg Baru Sungai Muntoh, Jelebu. We engaged 25 students and 7 teachers in a creative journey to explore the impact of textile waste and how to transform it through upcycling.

We designed this sustainability at school initiative to inspire youth to think differently about trash. Through meaningful hands-on experience, students discovered how plastic waste can become fabric. This pilot program also served as a model to showcase how even small schools can play a huge role in promoting sustainability.

Hands-On Learning Through a Structured Itinerary

Our afternoon began with setting up a colorful exhibition area. At 3:00 PM, we screened an eye-opening video about textile pollution and helped students distinguish between synthetic and natural fibers. Teachers also expressed appreciation for how the visual content helped enhance environmental awareness.

By 3:45 PM, students visited the observation zone to learn the stages of upcycling — what type of fabric goes where and which waste can become what. At 4:30 PM, we demonstrated how ironing plastic can turn waste into textile. This powerful step emphasized the essence of sustainability at school, allowing young minds to witness transformation firsthand.

Students Create with Their Own Hands

At 5:00 PM, we began the much-awaited upcycling workshop. Every student made a bookmark from repurposed plastic waste, showcasing their creativity while contributing to a greener planet. Students showed strong curiosity, and teachers shared that it sparked conversations even after the workshop ended.

By integrating sustainability at school, we allow learners to build confidence through eco-conscious crafting. We ended the day at 5:45 PM with proud smiles and colorful bookmarks in hand. This success proves that practical education is key to nurturing environmental responsibility.
