Turning Plastic Waste into Creativity
On February 5 and 13, 2025, a group of children from a local daycare center visited PSJKM’s Creative Lab to attend our Plastic to Textile Workshop. This initiative introduced them to the concept of upcycling, helping them explore creative ways to fully utilize plastic bags found in their homes. Through hands-on learning, they discovered how waste materials can transform into valuable, usable textiles.
Engaging Young Learners in Sustainability
The first session, held on February 5, welcomed 21 children aged 5 to 7 years old. We started with an engaging presentation about the impact of pollution. The children actively participated in a Q&A session, where they asked insightful questions about waste and household textile excess. This discussion helped them understand the consequences of overconsumption and inspired them to rethink their daily habits.
Hands-On Learning at the Creative Lab
Following the discussion, we guided the children through a Creative Lab tour. They observed firsthand how old cloth and plastic bags could be repurposed into new materials. This immersive experience deepened their understanding of upcycling and sparked their curiosity about sustainable crafting. Seeing tangible examples helped them connect theory with real-world applications.
From Plastic Bags to Usable Textiles
After the tour, our professional instructor demonstrated the upcycling process. The children learned step by step how plastic bags could be transformed into durable materials. Under the careful guidance of PSJKM’s expert team, they worked in small groups with DIY kits, bringing their ideas to life.
Encouraging Creativity and Skill Development
Each child had the opportunity to use a sewing machine, a new and exciting experience for many. Throughout the session, they demonstrated impressive creativity, enthusiasm, and teamwork. By the end of the workshop, they proudly showcased their upcycled projects, proving that sustainable habits can be both fun and rewarding.
