Waste to Bags Padawan: Turning Waste Into Value
On 20 May 2026, PSJKM collaborated with Majlis Perbandaran Padawan (MPP) for the Waste to Bags Padawan programme. The session introduced practical ways to transform unwanted jeans into useful tote bags.
The programme brought together 30 participants from the MPP community. Moreover, participants explored how creative skills can support environmental awareness and responsible material use.
During the session, participants learned how to transform used jeans into functional tote bags. Therefore, the activity showed how unwanted clothing can gain a new purpose instead of becoming waste.
PSJKM sincerely thanks Ts. Goh Thiam Ho, Setiausaha Majlis Perbandaran Padawan, for supporting this meaningful sustainability initiative.
From Old Jeans to Useful Bags
The Waste to Bags Padawan activity focused on practical textile upcycling. Participants worked with used jeans and explored how the material could become a functional everyday bag.
Instead of discarding old clothing, participants learned to look at existing materials differently. Furthermore, the activity demonstrated how simple sewing techniques can support creative reuse.
The workshop also encouraged participants to think about the amount of waste generated through everyday consumption. By reusing available materials, communities can reduce unnecessary disposal and extend product lifecycles.
Therefore, the programme turned an environmental message into a practical learning experience that participants could take home.
Building Environmental Awareness
The programme also supported greater environmental awareness within the MPP community. Through hands-on learning, participants could understand the value of reducing waste through reuse.
For example, old jeans can become useful products instead of going directly into disposal streams. Similarly, practical upcycling skills can encourage people to reconsider what they classify as waste.
As a result, Waste to Bags Padawan showed how community workshops can support more responsible consumption habits.
The activity also connects with broader sustainability efforts by encouraging people to reuse materials before considering disposal.
Empowering the Padawan Community
The collaboration with Majlis Perbandaran Padawan demonstrates the value of local partnerships. Importantly, community-based programmes can make sustainability more accessible and practical.
Through Waste to Bags Padawan, participants gained hands-on experience while contributing to greater environmental awareness within their community.
PSJKM welcomes more councils, organisations and community groups across Sarawak to work with our local team. Together, we can develop practical programmes that combine sustainability, creativity and community empowerment.
